What is WinMx?
WinMX is a freeware peer-to-peer file sharing program authored by Frontcode Technologies created in 2001. Officially, the support of WinMX by Frontcode ended in 2005 when they received threats of legal action by the RIAA. While the official website and servers for WinMX have been removed, a community of developers have brought the service online independently with the use of third party patches or a simple edited host file.
Will I need to 'patch' my WinMx in order for it to connect?
Yes, you must use one of the current workarounds, called "patches" to allow the program, WinMx, to connect to auxiliary peer caches. These patches work by modifying the DNS lookup WinMX uses to find peer
caches. When WinMX tries to find the FrontCode peer caches (central
servers essential for the operation of WinMX), it is instead directed
to look up one of the new peer caches set up by the WinMX community.
Where can I get the WinMx program?
You can get the WinMx program right
here, free, on WinMx.Knot4Prophet.com. Never pay a fee for obtaining or using WinMx.
Why is WinMx better than many other P2P networks?
WinMx is superior to many other peer to peer network programs because it is a small program (only 1MB) not using much cpu resources, it does not rely on a central server and it does not come packaged with any type of spyware or adware. Many filesharing peer to peer networks are being shut down or neutered by the R.I.A.A. whereas WinMx creators Frontcode were already served with legal papers by the R.I.A.A. in 2005. Yet, WinMx continues to exist because the users themselves took control of the network and WinMx is now in an enviable position in terms of viability in comparision with other peer to peer networks.
What types of files can I find on WinMx?
You can find a wide variety of files on WinMx, including music, movies, pictures, programs and ebooks.
Who are the R.I.A.A. and how are they a threat to peer to peer networks?
The R.I.A.A. is an acronym that stands for Recording Industry Artists Association and they are the major threat to all peer to peer file sharing networks that do not agree to their terms, such as the filtering out from searches of copyrighted material. They use legal tactics against the providers of peer to peer networking software as well as electronic attacks, such as flooding networks with fake files, on the networks themselves.
Are there ways to minimize the threat to WinMx posed by the R.I.A.A.?
Yes, there are a number of options available to minimize this threat, and each method is incorporated into each "patch" for WinMx. All methods rely on blocking known IP addresses employed by the R.I.A.A. in their attempts to electronically attack WinMx.
Is it legal to use WinMx?
Yes. WinMx is about sharing files between friends, for personal use. The legality of the content which you download or share on any peer to peer network is left your own determination, at your own discretion, and we at WinMx.Knot4Prophet.com take no responsibility whatsover for any claims filed.
How can Open Source licensing end the Patch Wars between the various WinMx patch groups?
An open source, autoupdating, blocking patch along with open source peer cache software will take the reigns of control of WinMx by some few and give control to the many, the users. These measures are currently underway. Use the forum on this site to keep up with the latest developments.
Where can I get a patch to make WinMx connect?
Follow the navigation menu on the left hand side of this site and highlight "Patches" and choose one of the options that follow, after reading through the overview which discusses the pros and cons of each patch.
I have patched my WinMx but I still cannot connect to WinMx. What can I do now?
Using the menu to the left, find the help section where there are multiple avenues which you can follow to alleviate your connection problem, including Live Help on WinMx and our WinMx Help Forum.
Are the Chat Rooms on WinMx centrally controlled by anyone for content?
No. The WinMx Peer Network is fully decentralized with no one person or group censoring Chat Rooms other than the hosts themselves. Because of this lack of censorship a disclaimer pop-up is presented which must be accepted in order to join the Chat Room area of WinMx.
How do I host a Chat Room on WinMx?
Use the menu to the left and read through various links relating to chat hosting. Once you are ready to begin hosting you can proceed to the Downloads area of the site for the relevant chat hosting programs.
I am on a 56K. Can I still benefit from WinMx?
Yes. 56K modem speeds are satisfactory for downloading mp3's, text files such as ebooks and small program files. Unfortunately, hosting chat rooms on WinMx requires more bandwidth than can be provided by a 56k Modem so hosting is not an option.
What is OpenNap?
WinMX began its life as an OpenNAP client capable of connecting to several servers simultaneously, although Frontcode later created a proprietary protocol, termed WinMX Peer Network Protocol (WPNP), which was used starting with WinMX 2 in May 2001. WPNP version 2 was phased out as WinMX 3.0 and its WPNP version 3 protocol came into existence. WinMx is able to connect to numerous additional networks with its OpenNap capabilities.
