WinMx Future
The future of WinMx remains
shrouded in a cloak of uncertainty.
Can we regain back the peer to peer marketshare that WinMx once
commanded?
The time is getting ripe for exactly that to happen especially
with peer to peer resources such as Torrentspy and their current
legal troubles getting all too common. WinMx is poised for a
renaissance of users because it lacks any continued control or
liability by its developers, Frontcode. The users themselves
maintain the network. A possible open source .dll blocking
patch may be on the horizon.
Check out the Open Source section on the site for a full analysis
of the benefits and risks associated with releasing an open source
patch for WinMx. Also, open source peer cache software may be
on the way, allowing any user to help in maintaining the WinMx peer
caches, while relaxing the burden on the few that now handle this
effort. There is even talk of developing an open source WinMx
file sharing client.
With all these avenues for growth and stability on the horizon
for WinMx, amid the backdrop of the RIAA and MPAA felling one
network after another, WinMx may well again rise to and even surpass
its once premier position atop the peer to peer networks.
