WinMx Present
The current situation as it stands with WinMx at
the present is one of relative disarray. Since Frontcode
shut down their peer caches in September 2005, two separate
methods were devised in which to get the users re-connected to
the WinMx Peer Network Protocol. Both involved a
modification of a hosts file to indicate the new peer cache
locations as well as methods of blocking the R.I.A.A. from
flooding the WPN. (For a
more detailed distinguishment between the operations of each
patch, refer to menu at the left, navigating to item labelled
WinMx Patches.)
KingMacro is no longer with
WinMxWorld and their .dll patch
has been subject to some recent, ongoing connection problems
affecting both WinMx file-sharers as well as hosts who use the
WCS chat host program. WinMxWorld is now offering their
version of KingMacro's modified .dll patch which has caused some
dispute between factions. Sites related to this team
include
WinMxWorld.com,
WinMxGroup.com,
MXStuff.org, and
WinMxConex.com.
On the other side of the patch coin are the PIE (Peer
Integration Exchange) teams. These teams began under a
singular PIE team (under
Vladd44) which
splintered in 2006
because of disagreement over the evolution and implementation
of the
PIE patch.
Vladd44
leads the original PIE team whose patch is offered on several
websites such as
Vladd44.com,
MxPie.com,
Acid Lounge and the
Beehive365.
Gemini777 heads up the splinter PIE team calling themselves MxPie. Their team includes several related websites
including
MxPie.info,
Gemini777.net and
WinMx4U.com.
The ongoing bickering between the groups has come to be known
amongst the WinMx community as
The Patch Wars. The cost
to the network is not known from the lack of professionalism
between some members of the three disparate groups. Some hope is on the
horizon, though, for the future of WinMx and may just put
WinMx poised to efficiently and seemlessly await the coming
ranks from the other major peer-to-peer networks, as they fall
like dominoes under the legal pressure and the vast financial
resources of the R.I.A.A. Continue on to hear more...
